Writing coaching and consultation

Writing CoachingIT’S A BRAVE AND WILD UNDERTAKING, writing a book.  A coach—your writing sherpa?—makes the journey easier and a lot more fun! High touch in our high-tech world, I support you as you get your next page/chapter/draft done!

Jamie,
You are the most amazing person to come across my path at this particular time. I do believe you are this story’s fairy godmother. You are making sense of what’s already been done and giving a new perspective on what is yet to be. Big Shared World is already better thanks to your involvement. I am better because of you. Wow! Colleen Waterston, BigSharedWorld.com

How writing coaching works

I’m on a mission—to help writers make their mark. Whether you’re a first-time writer or a pro: Your success is my success!

As your writing coach, I offer creative and practical support to help you meet your writing goals. We might start by getting clear on the one project from among several (hundred?!) possibilities you want to tackle—or by organizing the project that’s already clearly in your sights.

Organize, strategize, map out, dig in!

We’ll map out a structure—or strategy—for your nonfiction book, brainstorm the plot of your novel, or wrangle your writing schedule. We will dig into your work in progress—whether we’re developing your outline, reviewing your essays, or tracking the chapter-by-chapter progress of your book.

For instance,

  • Anne likes to brainstorm the basics of her plot before she starts.
  • Ricardo sends a month’s worth of blog posts ahead to discuss.
  • Viviana gets regular feedback on her nonfiction book proposal.
  • Jill commits to a 1000 words a day to speed her first draft.

Step by step

Whatever your project, we’ll develop concrete goals that match your writing dreams. You’ll get step-by-step assignments to help you achieve those goals: We’ll explore what you’ve done, plan your next moves, and always keep you heading towards the finish line.

I’ve been teaching creative writing at colleges and universities for nearly 20 years, and I’ve been a writing coach for nearly as long. But here’s something you likely don’t expect: I use a writing coach, too. In fact, I recently invested in my own writing career by getting five one-hour sessions with Florida writing guru Jamie Morris. In that short but focused time, I had two breakthroughs on a semi-comatose project that’s been languishing away for a year. I also felt energized, clear-headed, and excited about writing again. Her fresh eyes on my work and my career was exactly what I needed. Ryan G. Van Cleave, Creative Writing BFA Coordinator, Ringling College of Art and Design; author of THE WEEKEND BOOK PROPOSAL (Writers Digest); MEMOIR WRITING FOR DUMMIES (John Wiley & Sons), quoted in THE WRITER magazine

Like Lightning!

Just need a boost? A one-hour “lightning” session can untangle a knot, illuminate a solution, or haul your project out of the mud if it’s stuck and spinning its wheels.
